Criobera's Gaze

Many years ago, three warring tribes from The Sword, in the southern region of Anauroch, came together under the rule of a powerful coven of supernatural creatures. Their names were Gor-Gor, Sokol, and Vannagas, and they wore the guise of old human women with black feathered wings and faces like vultures bred from primordial abyssal evil. The combined might of the three tribes gave them a lot of influence in the region, which in turn caught the attention of another powerful being – Cyltus The Chosen.

Cyltus, through the great magical knowledge of his Netherese descendance, has foreseen his death, and decided to use the tribes to hide and guard his tomb, where he would be laid to rest with his most valuable secret, the Dark Verse. This magical ritual enabled Cyltus to gain the powers of a chosen of the God of Murder – Bhaal. Cyltus had achieved great power, but was utterly corrupted by it and his evil deeds left a scar on the land.

To secure his final resting place, and ensure that no one could reunite all the five phrases of the verse to become The Chosen, Cyltus manipulated the coven in order to gain control of the tribes. In time, it came to be that Vannagas slayed Gor-Gor and Sokol, and became the Vulture Queen, leading the three tribes under the influence of Cyltus.

The Dark Verse, still engraved in the finger bones of Cyltus’s hand, was separated when the mage cut off his own index finger and transferred the essence of the phrase into a crimson gem. This gem was one of the crystallized eyes of Criobera, The Great Crawler, and he named it Criobera’s Gaze. He who first touches the Gaze after the death of the previous owner will become a vessel of the phrase.

Once a year the tribes come together in a secret ritualistic festival called Shatterdrum, where Criobera is fed and its old carapace removed to allow it to grow ever more gargantuan each year.

Another three pieces were forged to contain the Gaze within a key, shaped like the three heads of the Vulture Queen. Only the whole key can return true sight to the Great Crawler, and make it open its mouth in awe before the beauty of old Netheril.
